Market-based, private sector-led approaches to agriculture
Using a private sector-led approach, this program worked with 68,091 smallholder farmers to increase their production of cassava, rice and small livestock through improved technologies. This was made possible through a FFP program funded by USDA, strengthened the capacity of farmer organizations, and improved agribusiness and support services.
The program also promoted dietary diversity and hygienic practices and proper nutrition among farming families. We also worked with farmers to establish 1,414 Village Savings and Loans (VSL) groups with a total of 35,774 members. Collectively, groups have used the power of their own community to save U.S. $1,647,960.
