Increasing access to diverse, safe and quality foods in Ethiopia

Growth through Nutrition is the U.S. Agency for International Development’s flagship multi-sector nutrition and WASH project. The project aims to improve the nutritional status of women and young children in Ethiopia’s four productive regions, focusing on the first 1000 days (from conception to age two). Building off of ENGINE project, Growth through Nutrition is working across all government and society levels to bring multi-sectoral nutrition programming to community levels, and link development and emergency efforts to build resiliency and sustainability.

The project will benefit a large proportion of the 14 million people in the 100 targeted woredas through health service improvements, increased production and availability of quality food, and WASH products and services, as well as SBCC (Social and behavior change communication) for nutrition. The project will reach over 1 million “1000 Days” clients to prevent stunting, and expand ENGINE’s work with most vulnerable households to help them overcome economic and other barriers to optimal nutrition.

As a sub-partner to Save the Children, Land O’Lakes is focusing on increasing access to diverse, safe and quality foods through nutrition sensitive livelihood activities. Specifically, Land O’Lakes is promoting more nutritious and productive varieties of vegetables, fruits, legumes, bio-fortified crops and small livestock. Growth for Nutrition is also supporting better use of inputs and cultivation practices to increase market availability of diverse foods, and begin to address concerns of food safety and post-harvest losses.
